Hello, thank you.

I am Matthew Bates. Somewhere along the way, many years ago, my nom de guerre became Mat Diablo. Silly, I know. I am professionally interested in branding, positioning, practical application and integration of new tech into old orgs, and of course, music. Music programming, discovery, and sonic branding. I like you.

That is as close as I am going to get to a mission statement.

I was born and raised in a remote outpost within the Sierra Nevada mountains. I live in San Diego now and for the foreseeable future.

    Professionally, I am/have been:

    • A successful brand manager, specializing in restructuring and salvaging damaged media brands
    • A music programmer with a focus on sonic branding, identity and music placement
    • A moderately well-respected creative in the areas of lifestyle marketing, media (radio) and music programming
    • A broadcaster and content producer of pop-culture and satirical material with a heavy bent towards the surreal

     Personally, I am/have been

    • A father and husband above all
    • A European motorcycle aficionado/ moderately skilled mechanic
    • A moderately skilled outdoorsman with focus on skiing and snowboarding
    • An Arduino nerd

     I am currently interested in

    • UX design
    • Social Publishing
    • Acquiring a license to fly
    • Practical application of the social
    • Mobile development and content distro
    • Craft Beer
    • The San Diego Super Chargers

My favorite album of all time is Cocteau Twins- Heaven or Las Vegas. I frequently experience l’appel du vide.

I find the term "new media" to be lazy and unsatisfying, and I am extremely skeptical of 90% of people that proclaim themselves to be "social media consultants".

Some media is dynamic, and some is static. I am interested in both.

Most importantly, I really do love to share ideas and experiences, and I think that we are lucky. Lucky to be pioneers in almost everything that we do.
